10 questions for…Laser Life!

After listening to some of the talented work from Laser Life we couldn’t help ourselves but ask him to take on our 10 Questions!

First things first how did you come to be?

I used to be the guitar player in a hardcore punk band named Gunslinger. But we went on an indefinite hiatus a few years ago. I guess I started this electronic solo thing as a way to have a musical outlet again. I missed making music a lot and one day I started fiddling around with a DAW and there was no turning back.

What genre of music would you say you play?

Some kind of chiptune / chipmusic. I try to make big sounding songs using lo fi synthesizers. Mainly synthesizers that emulate the sounds from old gaming consoles such as the NES and Sega Genesis. And then I play guitar parts on top of the electronics using a baritone guitar.

Which bands/artists do you take influences from?

I am influenced by chiptune musicians such as Anamanaguchi, Disasterpeace and Danimal Cannon. I am also influenced by a lot of non-electronic bands, especially some ones that have creative guitarists such as Death Cab for Cutie, Mew and Explosions in the Sky.

Best venue you’ve ever played and why?

I once participated in a band competition that was held in Harpa in Reykjavik. It’s a weird building.

Best gig you’ve ever attended?

There are so many good ones to choose from but I think I´m going to go with Roger Waters performing Dark Side of The Moon back in 2006. I also want to mention Killswitch Engage at Rock im Park in Germany in 2012. That was the first time I crowd surfed. A pretty memorable experience. Later that same day I was really drunk and crowd surfed again during a Marilyn Manson show and fell pretty hard on my face. That was a cool gig as well.

A band you would most like to support and why?

Ratatat. I have a lot of production stuff to talk to them about. Plus I‘m guessing that we share a lot of the same audience.

A band that you would like to work with?

Disasterpeace. The soundtrack he made for a game called Fez is pretty much the reason I started trying out electronic music.

Top five albums you’ve ever heard?

Explosions in the Sky – The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place

Death Cab for Cutie – Plans

Bright Eyes – I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning

Pink Floyd – The Wall

Mew – Frengers

Biggest accomplishment as a band/solo artist?

Making Polyhedron my first LP. I have been working on it for about 2 years now and it is almost finished. I am currently mixing it along with Icelandic producer Curver Thoroddsen from the band Ghostigital. It’s gonna be released in October, watch out for that!

What’s next in the pipeline?

I am organizing a release show for the album in Reykjavik. After that I will be performing a few shows during Iceland Airwaves, be sure to check out Laser Life if you are in town.
