10 Questions for No Hot Ashes!

With their new single ‘Bellyaches‘ blazing across the internet we managed to grab a quick word with Stockport band No Hot Ashes, a band we’ve been eager to speak to since their new release late February. So without further ado!

First things first how did you come to be?

NHA began life in late 2014 when we released our first single “Goose” & B-side “Skank” and here we are now.

What genre of music would you say you play?

We never set out to sound a particular way – sounds cliché but that is the honest truth – we were patient and kept writing and we feel we are now at a stage where we have our sound. Our music has been described as pop/disco/funk.

Which bands/artists do you take influences from?

Too many to list – a big influence in our sounds as a band come from 70s/80s Funk & Soul, anything disco or synth pop. Underlying that we are a guitar band – we take a lot of influence from bands like The Smiths, RHCP, Foals & The Pixies.

Best venue you’ve ever played and why?

Tough one – Deaf Institute in Manchester has always been a favourite of ours – great aesthetically and in sound and by far the best backstage area going…bunkbeds, a bath, 2 fridges – need we say more? That is closely followed by Night & Day – a Manchester legend on the venue scene – never had a bad gig there.

Best gig you’ve ever attended?

As a band collective we`d have to say Spring King at The Ferret (Preston). We had supported them that evening and we all stayed the full night to watch them play – it was a real punch in the face for us because they gave such a good performance and it was so intimate and in the crowds face. We`ve always strived to be a great live band and entertaining but since that day we have pushed even harder.

A band you would most like to support and why?

You’re teasing us now – this list would be endless but given the choice it would be any of the following: RHCP, The Specials, Kool & The Gang, Foals just to name a few. Purely based on stage presence and the way they make you feel when you watch them live these are some of the greatest bands we have seen live (with the exception of Kool & The Gang who we haven’t seen live).

A band that you would like to work with?

Not a band but – George Clinton – the absolute epitome of Punk-Funk and founder of Parliament and Funkadelic. A massive influence to us all and we are constantly finding new videos online of him working back in the day – not only a great performer but a genius producer – we would love to do a track with him.

Top five albums you’ve ever heard?

  • “Blood Sugar Sex Magik” – RHCP
  • “Blaxploitation” – Bootsy Collins
  • “Doolittle” – The Pixies
  • “Mothership Connection” – Parliament
  • “Because Of The Times” – Kings Of Leon

Biggest accomplishment as a band/solo artist?

This is purely individual to each and every band but a few that meant a lot to us would be: Reaching 200k listens on our single “Goose” (Spotify), Playing Kendal Calling & YNOT Festival. Our first Sold Out show in Manchester (Kraak Gallery/Aatma). More recently we Sold Out 2 nights at “Jimmy`s” in Manchester and that meant a lot to us to be lucky enough to play the venue 2 nights on the run and have a mad crowd both nights.

What’s next in the pipeline?

We are currently pushing our new single “Bellyaches” (go and listen!) Produced by the wizard that is Gavin Monaghan (Editors, The Twang, JAWS). We also have a really busy few months gigging and working around that we will be going back into the studio late March to work on some new material.

Thankyou so much guys for taking the time out to take on the 10 questions!

Please follow and help support the band!
