Ahead of their new single coming out soon and going on tour, we got to catch up Ivory Wave to talk about their favorite albums, who would they like to collaborate with and what’s next down the pipeline!
First things first how did you come to be?
Me and Luke (Bass) were in a band for a few months, one night we had a gig in Birmingham, and me and Luke went on a bit of a mad one and ended up in a Indian restaurant at about 4am, it was there and then we decided to start something new. Ivory Wave was born in a drunken stupor fuelled by curry and cobra beer haha
What genre of music would you say you play?
We describe ourselves as groove, its all about the beats and rhythm for us
Which bands/artists do you take influences from?
I love hip hop music, love the beats and sounds they use. public enemy, a tribe called quest and NWA to name a few, just love all the sampling techniques and the rhythms
we try to incorporate as much as that as possible into our music
we do love our cheesy pops songs though, anything from madonna to Edwyn collins, thats probably where we get our songs like ‘paradise’ from really groovy verse with a catchy chorus
Best venue you’ve ever played and why?
i really love the sound at the Kasbah in coventry, really deep subs, you can feel the bass in your chest when a bands playing there
Best gig you’ve ever attended?
the libertines at Hyde park, it was just mental people climbing delay towers fights breaking out everywhere TOTAL CHAOS
A band you would most like to support and why?
probably someone like Kasabian I feel they are similar to us in that they’re using electronic beats and synths me and Luke also love the band Real Lies from London, i think their debut is a masterpiece .
A band that you would like to work with?
I’m not sure, probably new order or underworld, i feel we could learn a lot from them
Top five albums you’ve ever heard?
Jagwar Ma – Howlin
The Stone Roses – self titled
Nas – Illmatic
A Tribe Called Quest – Midnight Marauders
Oasis – Definitely Maybe
Biggest accomplishment as a band/solo artist?
walking out on stage at the o2 academy 3 in Birmingham a few weeks ago, it felt so humbling to us to have that many people in one room all wanting to hear our music
What’s next in the pipeline?
we have a new single coming out before the summer and were planning a few tours, its full steam ahead for us
