First things first how did you come to be?

Kelan and KC met about three years ago, shortly after Kelan moved to Columbus. They were playing together in band that split ways, and the two decided to move forward together and start writing their own stuff. Fast forward a few months… Kelan and I (Lucy) met at a popular Columbus dance party called Ladies 80s. We became fast friends after learning that we were both musicians. I (Lucy) auditioned, and together we became Fine Animal. It took us a while to figure out who we were and what kind of sound we wanted to have, but after two years of playing together we are finally finding our groove and we couldn’t be more excited about it.

What genre of music would you say you play?

We classify our music as indie electronic, with touches of chill-wave and dream pop.

Which bands/artists do you take influences from?

Pinback, St. Vincent, Air, LCD Soundsystem, and Radiohead have been very influential to our sound. We each have pretty diverse tastes in music, and we’ve found that our individual preferences have helped to shape our unique sound.

Best venue you’ve ever played and why?

We love playing at Brothers Drake in Columbus. It’s a popular mead bar that has been incredibly supportive of the local music scene. You can walk into Brothers Drake any night of the week and hear good music. There’s a great sense of community at Brothers Drake thanks to its awesome regulars and creative environment. We are really lucky to live in a city that is devoted to the local music scene. Great drinks, great people, great music, what more could you ask for in a venue?

Best gig you’ve ever attended?

I (Lucy) have had the pleasure of seeing Future Islands perform a few times and each time I’ve left the show saying it was the best show I had ever seen. Lead singer Samuel Herring puts on a truly captivating performance, and the band’s synth heavy tunes and groovy bass lines had me on my feet dancing.

A band you would most like to support and why?

There are a lot of really awesome bands in Columbus that we would love to support, so it’s hard for us to name just one. St Seneca, Kid Runner, Giant Claw, Roller Girl! and Playing to Vapors are just a few Ohio bands that we really enjoy and support. We actually have a couple upcoming shows with Playing to Vapors in Canton and Cleveland. These bands all kick ass and are bound for great things!

A band that you would like to work with?

We all have a bit of a crush on Annie Clark, better known as St. Vincent. She’s just… so cool. I (Lucy) look up to her as an artist and often try to channel her fierce stage presence during shows. She is a brilliant songwriter and a compelling performer. That being said, St. Vincent is the dream band we would like to work with someday.

Top five albums you’ve ever heard?

Oh this one is a toughie… In no particular order:

Summer in Abaddon – Pinback
Loveless – My Bloody Valentine
Moon Safari – Air
Space Oddity – David Bowie
Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots – The Flaming Lips

Biggest accomplishment as a band/solo artist?

We recently reached 10,000 plays on Soundcloud which was very exciting. We are extremely grateful for the support we have received from our fans. We love you guys!

What’s next in the pipeline?

Well, we are releasing our debut album later this spring which will feature some already released tracks and some new songs that we can’t wait for the world to hear. Lately we have been recording and shooting some videos for new music. We’ve also got some shows coming up in the near future:

4/07 @ Carabar – Columbus, OH

4/11 @ Buzzbin Art & Music Shop – Canton, OH

4/17 @ Northside Tavern – Cincinnati, OH

5/01 @ Mahall’s – Cleveland, OH

6/12 @ The Basement – Columbus, OH

6/26 @ Pianos – New York, NY

Thanks so much for taking the time out Lucy to speak to me! It’s very much apprecited, hopefully I’ll make it to Columbus one day!
